Future Directions

Stimulate, facilitate and fund molecular target-based discovery of imaging agents, diagnostics, and drugs, building upon the molecular signatures of cancer cells

Discover and develop new drugs and biologics for combined modality therapy with radiation therapy

Discover and develop new radioprotector drugs for clinical cancer treatment and for potential use for normal tissue radioprotection and to ameliorate damage post-treatment

Widen access to compound data and information for anticancer research use

Develop and apply statistical methods to facilitate and accelerate the development and clinical evaluation of effective molecularly targeted therapeutics and to identify trial designs and procedures that will be informative and attractive to patients and physicians; Utilize genomic, gene expression and other molecular data to design diagnostic classification systems that permit current treatments to be targeted to patients most likely to respond and that facilitate the development of new and highly effective and specific therapeutics

Build upon a shared pathology informatics network to create a nationwide system to allow a just-in-time approach to find specimens and data required for cancer research

Establish a more robust quality assurance program for innovative techniques in radiation therapy planning and delivery

Stimulate, coordinate, and fund the development of diagnostic assays and conduct clinical trials assessing their utility

Support and fund our early to late phase Clinical Trials networks, and establish a timeline and evaluate our key pilots to ascertain their impact on the scientific quality, accessibility, and efficiency of our Clinical Trials networks

Stimulate and enhance interagency, industry, investigator, and other public-private partnerships in the development and clinical testing of diagnostics, imaging agents and therapeutics

Coordinate and expand efforts to recruit and retain talented, high quality staff so that we can continue to innovate and evolve strategies to meet our Division goal
